I didn’t grow up on Thai food, other than the occasional couple of bites I would have of my mom’s leftovers. It just wasn’t something on our “go-to” list of places. I grew up with an “on-the-go” lifestyle, constantly running from practice to practice or game to game. We didn’t really have much time for a nice sit down meal. It was Burger King, Wendy’s or McDonald’s Drive through, or the late night skyline run after a game or practice. I wasn’t the most adventurous eater, either. Growing up with a handful of stomach sensitivities, I never wanted to venture far from my chicken fingers, fries, cold turkey sandwich or 2 single wiener buns, no cheese at Skyline Chili. Yes, I was that kid. I’m happy to say, I have stepped out of my comfort zone tremendously in the food department. I will now try mostly anything once (with a few exceptions)! I have really come to enjoy Thai, and it is one of the foods we seek out if we are going out to eat.
Our friends had asked us to go out to dinner with them, and said Thai Terrace Mason was one of their favorite Thai places locally. Of course, we were all in! I always browse the menu before I eat anywhere, and I saw a handful of options that I would want to try. The restaurant is located in the neat, downtown area of Mason, OH. It is located on the corner in an old three-ish story building with a neat terrace out back (hence the name). It was a little chilly the day we went, so we didn’t get to enjoy the outside area this time. The building itself reminds me of an old house from the 1950s. It is not really updated, but has a lot of character to it, as you could imagine. The smell when you walk in the door immediately makes your mouth water. The fresh smell of all the spices had my appetite bursting from the minute we walked in.
We were led upstairs to our table, which was in a smaller room with a few tables. My guess is this was probably an old bedroom at one point. Definitely a cozy environment so if you want privacy, you may want to choose a different restaurant for the night, or maybe you can ask to be put in your own room depending on how busy they are. We met on a Saturday at 6pm without reservations and didn’t have an issue getting seated, but if you have a large group, you may want to call in and reserve a table.
Our server was extremely friendly and patient with all our questions. One of our friends ordered Bubble Tea (I forget which flavor), but him and his wife really enjoyed it. Here is a list of the food we ordered:
-Thom Yum Soup with Pork
-Basil Fried Rice with beef (requested medium spice level)
-Pad Prik King with shrimp/beef/chicken (requested mild spice level)- Our friend also got this but got a medium spice level
-Panang Curry with pork (requested no spice at all)
Our reviews were quite mixed! Our friend did enjoy his soup, but the spice levels on the rest of our food were off. My husband loves spice, and he felt his Basil Fried Rice didn’t have any heat to it at all. My Pad Prik King was recommended as our server’s favorite and mine was a little bit spicy but not overbearing. It also had a red chili paste, so I would say it tasted mild to medium on the spice level. Our friend didn’t think his Pad Prik King had a medium spice level to it either, but his wife could barely eat her curry because it was too spicy for her, and she wanted as little spice as possible. The dishes themselves came out hot and fresh. The overall flavor was good, however, I wouldn’t say it is my absolute favorite place to go for Thai.
I would give it a 6/10. I would go back if we were invited by friends, but probably wouldn’t choose it myself until I try the handful of other restaurants on my list first!
We enjoyed our time with our friends and the overall atmosphere was neat because it was different from most restaurant layouts. It was sot of loud because the three tables were on top of each other in a small peace, but it was still a peaceful environment. If we end up back at Thai Terrace Mason, I would probably try Sushi, Chicken Satay, and the Cashew Nut Stir Fry! If you are in the Mason area and are craving Thai, at least give it a shot!
